Resumen del caso:
Michael Fugee fue ordenado sacerdote de la arquidiócesis de Newark en 1994.
Fue acusado en 2001 de haber acariciado a un niño cuando éste tenía 13 años en 1999.
Fugee admitió ante la policía que obtenía gratificación sexual del contacto con el niño.
Se le impuso una licencia administrativa y, en abril de 2003, se le declaró culpable de contacto sexual agravado.
Fugee fue sentenciado a cadena perpetua y se le ordenó registrarse como delincuente sexual.
En 2006, la condena fue anulada en apelación debido a declaraciones perjudiciales en el primer juicio y un problema con las instrucciones del juez a los jurados.
Para evitar un nuevo juicio, Fugee firmó un acuerdo por el que nunca volvería a trabajar sin supervisión con niños y que se sometería a terapia para delincuentes sexuales.
En 2009, Fugee había regresado al ministerio, como capellán de un hospital por muy breve tiempo (hasta que los administradores del hospital se enteraron de su pasado) y en parroquias.
También recibió asignaciones de cancillería.
En abril de 2013 salió a la luz que Fugee había estado ayudando con retiros nocturnos para adolescentes en una parroquia de Colt's Neck, incluida la audiencia de confesiones de los adolescentes.
Los feligreses expresaron consternación al enterarse de su condena pasada y su acuerdo de no trabajar con niños.
Fugee renunció al ministerio activo el 2 de mayo de 2013.
El Vaticano anunció su laicización en marzo de 2014.
